Treating Sleep Disorders

Snoring and other sleep disorders can affect personal relationships, as well as overall health. Robb Family ENT physicians are skilled in evaluating and treating sleep disorders.

Snoring

Snoring results when airflow from the mouth or nose into the lungs causes the tissues of your throat to vibrate. Besides interfering with a good night’s sleep, snoring may indicate a serious medical problem (see below). We offer a variety of options to help you prevent or manage your snoring. Serious cases may require in-office treatment or surgery.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea means that your breathing is blocked or partly blocked during sleep. Left unchecked, it can lead to serious cardiovascular and neurological problems. Fortunately, sleep apnea is usually treatable with a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device or surgically (e.g., uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, uvulectomy, hyoid suspension or nasal surgery).

Upper Airway Obstruction

An upper airway obstruction may occur in the windpipe, voice box (larynx) or throat. By making it hard to breathe, an obstruction can disrupt sleep and poses a health risk during waking hours. Our approach to upper airway obstruction consists of taking a thorough history, performing a physical examination and making a definitive diagnosis. Depending on the cause, we’ll recommend the appropriate treatment.
